Woodrow Wilson High School is planning its first annual Out of The Darkness Campus Walk for March 10 from 1 to 3 p.m. at the high school stadium.
The walk is in organization with the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP), and the goal is to raise money and awareness about mental health and suicide in the community.
Suicide is the 10th leading cause of death in the United States, taking more than 40,000 lives annually. The Center for Disease Control recently reported that suicide rates amongst teenage girls are the highest they have been in 40 years. In D.C., suicide is the third-leading cause of death for ages 15 through 34, and is the leading cause of death between ages 10 and 14 in the state of Maryland.
