A fire engine responds to a car wreck on Pennsylvania Avenue NW. (Brady Holt/The Current/October 2017)

Fire engines rolled up and down Geranium Street NW on Sunday evening, headed to a fire in the 7300 block of 12th Street. Our neighbor, Ernst Yombo, was able to exit the house and obtain assistance from his next-door neighbor, Robert Corbett. The rest of the family was not there at the time of the fire and is safe.

Advisory neighborhood commissioners Stacey Lincoln and Stephen Whatley were on the scene, as was Jackson Carnes of Ward 4 D.C. Council member Brandon Todd’s office. The community was notified quickly by association president Mark Pattison, who reminded everyone that “it is incumbent on us to do what we can, when we can — as best we can — should our help be asked.”

Mr. Yombo, who is the principal of the Latin American Montessori Bilingual School, suffered first- and second-degree burns on his hands and shins and was taken to the hospital to be treated. He has lived on 12th Street for quite a while, and his wife has community ties going back to her earlier residence on Holly Street and attendance at Shepherd Elementary. Friends from the Shepherd Park and the Latin American Montessori Bilingual School communities will continue to monitor the situation and respond to needs that arise.
