The Friends of the Juanita E. Thornton/Shepherd Park Library invite neighbors and friends from nearby communities to a slide show and memories presentation from 7 to 8:30 p.m. on March 5 in the 2nd floor conference room, 7420 Georgia Ave. NW.
Ralph Blessing will share his experience in various Latin American countries from his Peace Corps days from the 1960s to the present. Ralph has exhibited his photographs several times in Takoma Park.
A large number of Shepherd Park and Takoma residents are former Peace Corps volunteers and will share their own memories after Blessing’s presentation. It is important to hear these stories lest they be lost. It is also an opportunity for our teenagers and young adults to receive encouragement to participate in the Peace Corps and other international service opportunities.
Library staff, with support from the friends group, is now involved in a project to record the life stories of the older residents from the community. As we are a neighborhood of many older residents who have lived rich lives, this is a much appreciated project.
Potential participants should contact library staff at the library desk or Claudio Anyaso at firstname.lastname@example.org. This is an integral part of the library’s response to the call of the DC Public Libraries Strategic Plan to speak to the unique needs and character of the communities it serves.
