On the Market: Contemporary colonial rises above it all in Spring Valley

Once slated for a tear down, this now newly renovated, modern take on a classic colonial makes the most of its most impressive feature—an expansive, elevated view of Spring Valley and beyond. The home, located at 4837 Loughboro Road NW and designed by DC firm Overmeyer Architects, seamlessly connects interior and exterior spaces with terraces and balconies on every level and oversized windows and doors to maximize uninterrupted sightlines.

The house offers 5300 square feet of flexible and open living space on four levels and includes six bedrooms, five-and-a-half baths (one of which—the master—can be fitted with an elevator) and a two-car heated garage wired to accommodate a car charger for electric vehicles. It will officially be on the market on Jan 30 and listed for $3.85 million.

A pristine and spare façade (white brick with black trim and flagstone entry) creates a sense of privacy. Once inside, a full-width foyer flows back to a wall of windows, which reveal a terrace and treetop view. To the right is a formal living and dining room and beyond that, a hallway leading to a sophisticated powder room with a white vanity and black-and-white marble countertop.

“Significant” three-piece molding and wide-planked, white-stained oak flooring run throughout the home.

To the left of the foyer is the family room, anchored on the far wall by floor-to-ceiling accordion glass doors that open onto a large, wide terrace. Another elegant focal point: a sleek black marble fireplace flanked by built-in bookcases.

Off the family room is the kitchen, bright white with extensive Shaker-style cabinetry, black-and-white quartz counters (with a curved edge on the island/breakfast bar), textured subway tile back splash and Waterworks fixtures. Stainless appliances include a Wolf microwave, convection wall oven, six-burner range with custom Zephyr vent cover; concealed Bosch dishwasher and Sub-Zero refrigerator/freezer.

Up on the second level are two guest bedrooms (one with en-suite bath, there is also a hall bath), a laundry room with a separate sink and Maytag washer and dryer, and the master suite with its own spacious private deck and its magnificent view off the bedroom.

The master suite also includes two huge walk-in closets fitted with Capitol Closets custom storage systems and an ultra-luxurious bath with multi-patterned marble flooring, double sink vanity with marble counter and integrated dressing table, Victoria + Albert destination tub and two-person frameless glass shower. As with all the bathrooms, black and white is the predominant color way and Waterworks fixtures are standard.

The third level houses two more bedrooms—currently set up as a separate office and den—along with a full bath with a double vanity and glass shower.

On the lower level, there is a game room, family/recreation room, bedroom with en-suite full bath and a very deep closet that could be converted to a wine cellar. At the base of the stairs, there is space already plumbed for a wet bar.

A glass door off the family room opens onto a covered flagstone patio that leads to a newly planted green space and terraced garden with stone retaining walls. Steps meander through the yard down to a wood deck at the lower end of the property.

Located on Loughboro Road NW, the border between Spring Valley and the Palisades, the home offers easy access to Northern Virginia and Bethesda as well as the MacArthur Corridor, Georgetown, and points east. The neighborhood is known for its “suburb in the city” vibe and strong community connections.
