Letter to the Editor: Safeway alcohol license doesn’t reflect community’s needs

Dupont Circle's Safeway is located at 17th and Corcoran streets NW. (Brian Kapur/The Current/June 2017)

I have been following the soap opera of Advisory Neighborhood Commission 2B’s battle over Safeway’s beer and wine application.

I have lived in the Dupont Circle neighborhood for 40-plus years and have never heard anyone complain that there weren’t enough stores where you could buy beer or wine. On the other hand I have heard many and continuing complaints that Safeway doesn’t carry this or that grocery item or was out of something.

I would also like to mention that I am not aware that the store has been supportive of neighborhood events, such as the recent 17th Street Festival.

I would like to know why the ANC commissioners appear to be in support of the application. It does not appear to be in sync with their constituents’ desires. I suggest that they listen to them with a more open and objective mind.
