ANC 3C
Cleveland Park, Woodley Park, Massachusetts Avenue Heights, Cathedral Heights
At the commission’s June 19 meeting:
■ commissioners reported the closure of two longtime restaurants on Connecticut Avenue NW in June: Nam Viet and Ripple.
■ the D.C. Department of Transportation’s Paul Hoffman announced that the planned Cleveland Park streetscape project, intended to revitalize Connecticut Avenue NW, was rejected by the U.S. Commission of Fine Arts for a second time this year — and is now “back to the drawing board.” The project targets aesthetic and functional issues around the commercial strip, including drainage and traffic. While the Fine Arts Commission supports the thrust of the streetscape project, the panel called the proposal uneven and incomplete.
■ commissioners voted 5-3 to support the Woodley Park Community Association’s proposed amendments to the D.C. Comprehensive Plan. These included a request to classify the area around the Marriott Wardman Park hotel, 2660 Woodley Road NW, as appropriate only for “moderate” density, not high or medium density as currently encouraged. Jessica Wasserman, Beau Finley and Emma Hersh opposed the motion; Wasserman cited various “procedural and legal issues,” Finley contended that the proposal lacked neighborhood engagement and Hersh had unresolved questions about the community’s views on housing density.
■ commissioner Lee Brian Reba relayed complaints about debris left by a hot dog vendor west of Connecticut Avenue NW.
■ commissioner Emma Hersh reported that a second constituent this year had been injured in a motor vehicle accident at the intersection of 34th and Porter streets NW. She said she is concerned about “general pedestrian safety” in the area, and pledged to “continue working on this situation until it’s resolved.”
■ commissioner Emma Hersh announced the successful arrival of a Cleveland Park farmers market on June 3 as part of a six-month pilot, with the number of vendors already having grown from five to eight. The market sells assorted produce like fish, meat, fruit and vegetables, and operates each Saturday from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on the west side of Connecticut Avenue NW between Newark Street and the Uptown Theatre.
■ commissioner Angela Bradbery reported that certain broken items at Newark Street Playground, including a water fountain, are being addressed by the city.
■ commissioner Maureen Kinlan Boucher reported a sewage overflow onto streets near the corner of Woodley Road and Wisconsin Avenue NW. Boucher also reported that she had been working with the city to address speeding issues at the intersection of Massachusetts Avenue and Macomb Street NW.
■ commission chair Nancy MacWood reported that she had been working with residents to remove a “redundant” Verizon utility pole on Newark Street NW. MacWood also relayed some complaints about issues related to Macomb Playground, such as after-hours use and the location of its sandbox. Additionally, MacWood announced that a contractor had been selected to study traffic at the intersection of Idaho and Wisconsin avenues and Ordway Street.
