Gonzaga defeated DeMatha 2-1 in overtime to repeat as Washington Catholic Athletic Conference boys soccer champions at the Maryland Soccerplex in Boyds, Md., on Sunday night.

The Eagles scored the first goal of the game early in the first half when sophomore Ryan Elie knocked in a header.

But that early momentum quickly dissipated when senior goalie Nick Gerlach was assessed a red card late in the first half, which disqualified him for the rest of the match. DeMatha promptly tied the game with 31 minutes to play in regulation. Both teams’ defenses played tough to force overtime.

In the extra session, Gonzaga had a critical call go its way to set up a penalty kick opportunity for senior Ryan Teuschl. His initial try was blocked, but he pounded in the rebound for the goal and the championship.
